The fifth-grade Drama Club, led by Mrs. Reiter and Mrs. Murphy, presented “Bully Tales” Thursday, January 30 at 6 p.m. The performance took place in Highland's gym. The students will perform again for the HES student body on Friday, January 31 during school hours.“Bully Tales” features familiar fairy tale characters who tackle a very serious issue.
When Drama Club members first began meeting in November, they brainstormed about what type of play they wanted to present. Members chose the topic of bullying, a problem relevant to what children their age sometimes deal with at school and in extracurricular activities. By incorporating fairy tales, fantasy and sports, Drama Club members hope to bring the issue of bullying to a whole new light.
In Act 1, titled “Name Calling,” familiar characters from movies explain they are not really bullies but are instead misunderstood. It also deals with understanding other people’s points of view. Act II, “When Words Turn into Actions,” deals with real-life situations in the school setting and how they are often handled incorrectly, offering other options students should choose. The finale includes the entire cast of actors and artists, summarizing points covered in the first two acts.
